Rebecca Francis shot and killed a giraffe in Africa and posted several pictures posing next to the dead animal on social media. The images gained a great deal of attention particularly after Ricky Gervais posted one of the pictures commenting, “What must’ve happened to you in your life to make you want to kill a beautiful animal and then lie next to it smiling?”
Francis defends her actions claiming she shot the animal to feed the African community and she was actually honoring his life by killing him. Francis stated, “He was inevitably going to die soon and he could either be wasted or utilized by the local people. I chose to honour his life by providing others with his uses and I do not regret it for one second. Once he was down there were people waiting to take his meat. They also took his tail to make jewellery, his bones to make other things, and did not waste a single part of him. I am grateful to be a part of something so good."
Here are some of the comments Francis has received on social media:
She's disgusting. A poor excuse for a human being.
I really hope these dumb girls get what's coming to them and they unsuspectingly get mauled to death by one of the animals they're after. The only posing with animals should be with them happy and alive.
Giraffes are the friendliest animals ever. This bitch needs to be shot!!!!
Why is the general public upset about this incident? Is it because a young, attractive girl killed the animal? Is it because it’s a giraffe? Is it because giraffes are not a common food source? Is it because he was not killed in a slaughterhouse? The general public certainly is not vegan and condones far worse and far more atrocities to be committed against animals in their own cities and towns every day.
Anyone that is not vegan really has no reason to be outraged by this killing. The giraffe was used as a food source. If you are not vegan it can be assumed you find it morally acceptable to kill animals for food. It would be fair to assume this giraffe lived a far better life and had a far less traumatic death then the billions of cows, chickens, and pigs that are "rightfully" killed for food. It is hypocritical to think it is acceptable to kill some and not others.
